bite from your apple
Field Notes
"Bite from Your Apple" was inspired by my Taylor Baritone acoustic. If you read enough of my field notes, you'll see that's a common theme. I often say that every guitar (actually, every instrument) has a song (at least) in it. Any guitar I've ever bought or borrowed inspired at least one song. My Baritone has inspired a number of songs.
A baritone guitar isn't just lower in pitch, it's emotionally and psychologically different - darker, swampier, sexier - to my ear.
So the opening riff that I was playing around with one evening took me in that direction. I knew the riff was a solid verse progression. I was mumbling nonsense to capture the melody... and then I reached the chorus and the words popped straight into my head:
i wanna take another BITE FROM YOUR APPLE
i’m ready as hell to get right back in the saddle
(we’re) gonna break these chains and we’re gonna shake these shackles
i wanna take another BITE FROM YOUR APPLE, yeah
That courses provides a destination, and then you just have to finish the puzzle. Who am I talking to? Where are we? Why do I want enough bite? What are the stakes of this relationship?
The answers? You and me are stand-ins for Adam and Eve. We're our own garden of Eden. Apples taste good.
And - oh - just life and death, good and evil, sacred and sin...
i’m sure this means of the fall of me
and I’m landing right beside the tree
cause even paradise, baby, comes for a fee…
Just another song in the life of rock and roll...
Lyrics
VERSE 1:
you’ve always been a forbidden fruit
strutting your stuff in your knee-high boots
you’ve earned a reputation of ill-repute
some even say you’re a walking lawsuit
of course I know the story of adam and eve
when I enter your orchard i might never leave
but I’ve had one taste and baby i believe
you’re worth the risk; i’m not naive
CHORUS:
i wanna take another BITE FROM YOUR APPLE
i’m ready as hell to get right back in the saddle
(we’re) gonna break these chains and we’re gonna shake these shackles
i wanna take another BITE FROM YOUR APPLE, yeah
VERSE 2:
the minute we’re alone my body starts aching
you’re giving me a look that says you’re mine for the taking
there’s sinning in the air, if i’m not mistaken
i know damn well the life we’ve forsaken
so give me everything that you’ve got to give
running scared of pleasure is no way to live
the garden of eden delivered us a gift
we’ll both know good and evil when we seal it with a kiss
CHORUS:
BRIDGE:
i’m sure this means of the fall of me
and I’m landing right beside the tree
cause even paradise, baby, comes for a fee…
CHORUS:
