chasing the goddess
Field Notes
"Chasing the Goddess" was born during a kayak trip in the Sea of Cortez.
Angie and I were there on a week-long trip with my brother, some friends from work, and three guides, paddling island-to-island between Loreto and Mulege.
Every morning, I would get in the backseat of our kayak; Angie would get in the front seat; and we would paddle 10 or miles to the next beach. There we were set up a new camp and then hike, swim, fish, and explore. It was fantastic.
At some point, I made a joke that no matter how hard or fast I paddled, I couldn't close the 2-foot gap between me and her. That led me to making the throwaway comment, "Same old story... I've been chasing the goddess all my life".
Well, that line stuck with me; made it into my notebook; and eventually produced this song - which isn't about Mexico or kayaking.
"I remember the first time I smelled perfume"
Maybe you do too?
"Sweet like honey, it filled the room"
My earliest memories recall it as simultaneously nauseating and mysterious... how apt is that?
The droning chord progression summoned images of incense smoke, tents, veils, temple dances... and so... there you go. Throw in some tabla, electric sitar, and zills, and there you have it.
Perhaps the least Mexican song to have ever been born in Mexico.
Lyrics
VERSE 1:
i remember the first time I smelled perfume
sweet like honey... it filled the room
warmth ran through me like a flood
since that day it hasn’t left my blood
CHORUS:
i’ve been CHASING THE GODDESS, all my life
i’ve been CHASING THE GODDESS, wrong or right
and I’ll be CHASING THE GODDESS tonight
VERSE 2:
in my mind she's always calling me
from a place that I can barely see
i race to reach her arms stretched out
but as I grasp she always fades... out
BRIDGE:
she moves like a ghost, but I want to get close to see what’s there
i search in her eyes, the secrets she hides, I need to share
in her arms are lessons that I never seem to take away
so I return to swim again in her pool another day
