everything fades
Field Notes
"Everything Fades" is another piece of music that I wrote on my National Resonator guitar in 2018 at the cabin, and then finished in 2019 at the San Jose studio.
The music came first. It was written on our patio amidst the sycamores, the oaks, and the madrones.
Amongst the stellar jays, the red-shouldered hawks, and the california quail.
The lyrics were mostly written in San Jose, where we don't see much change in the weather. In Carmel Valley, near the Santa Lucia mountains, however, we do.
Snow does come and go on top of the mountains. Steel rusts in the mountain rains.
Trees mold. Limbs droop.
Watching the seasons change in Carmel Valley prompted the song.
The Americana feel stayed with this song, as did the resonator guitar.
At the end, however, I couldn't help throwing a Sigur Ros-like, post-rock build to the final note.
Why? Just because I'd like to play that ending on stage someday.
Lyrics
VERSE 1:
leaves fall from the trees outside
dew drips from the telephone line
stars descend across the sky
fruit rots along the vine
CHORUS:
EVERYTHING FADES from view
EVERYTHING FADES, but you
VERSE 2:
snow melts when the temperatures rise
steel rusts when the clouds cry
trees mold when the summer’s done
and meat spoils in the heat of sun
CHORUS (2x):
VERSE 3:
limbs droop as age sets in
seasons wither when seasons end
love ebbs after love flows
lives decay when [energy goes
CHORUS (2x):
