Sometimes there's not much to say about a song.

​

I was going through some drum samples and heard a beat that prompted me to think, "I've never tried to write to that simple of a beat before".

​

Usually, when I'm writing to a beat, it's going to be something that's syncopated or ethnic.

In this case, I decided to take the simple beat as a challenge to write a riff.

​

Once I had the riff attached to the throbbing rhythm, I wanted to write about something suitable, so I started brainstorming ideas about a person who calls asking, "Are you up?"

​

I probably wrote 'around' that idea for an hour or so before I realized, "that's the hook and the title... just say it".

​

And there you go...

​

It's also always fun to play with effects in a song. They can be tacky, but I like it in this song.

it gets so hard, and it begins to hurt

i could take something, to make me doze
