Field Notes

Whenever we make a weekend strip in the Bay Area, I try to bring my Yamaha travel guitar along with me. I can almost always write a song or two, if I do.

In this case we were spending a weekend at Sanctuary Resort in Marina, California.

I woke up one morning and started playing my guitar while looking at the sand, ocean, horizon, and blue sky.

Angie called out to me on the patio, "How's the temperature?"

I answered, "There's a hot sun and cool breeze."

She replied, "Thanks."

I grabbed my iPhone, strummed, and sang:

there’s a hot sun and cold breeze at the shore today

which one’s gonna win, it’s hard to say

Hmmm... not bad.

Then:

you’d better wear your layers cause this is a time of change

and you never know when life will turn the page

We live and spend a lot of time on a coast that is eroding.

We live on faultiness and volcanoes.

We live in flood basins, fire hungry forests, and dry-ass deserts.

Yeah...

we forget the world is still a WILDERNESS

This song wrote itself in about 15 minutes. I was at the right place, at the right time, with the right tools.

And ready to receive.

Lyrics

VERSE 1:

there’s a hot sun and cold breeze at the shore today

which one’s gonna win, it’s hard to say

you’d better wear your layers cause this is a time of change

and you never know when life will turn the page

CHORUS:

you can hide behind these doors and walls

until the levee breaks

we can hope and pray until the day we need

help for heaven sake

it won’t take much to clean these streets and

wash away the mess

we forget the world is still a WILDERNESS

VERSE 2:

there’s a storm cloud and a rainbow hanging in our sky

i wonder if it’s meant to be a sign

so i’m going to wear my layers cause this is a time of change

and you never know when life will rearrange

CHORUS:

BREAK:

ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah

ah-ah-ah-ah-ah

ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah

ah-ah-ah-ah-ah

CHORUS:
