my match
"My Match" started with a guitar groove in our condo in Monterey.
I was in my studio playing my D'Angelico Custom Excel semi-hollow Hawaiian guitar. I love the custom Hawaiian paint job on it... very Glenn Coast... anyway, I was strumming this heavy, repetitive pattern that I liked. Angie was at the other end of the condo in the living room. At some point I stopped playing, and from across the condo she yelled, “I really, really like that.”
I said, “That’s why you’re my match. We like the same things.”
And there it was.
I shut the studio door and started writing:
You’re my match, my flame at night
Ignite me baby in this moonlight
With every touch we set the world alight
Yeah you’re my match, we burn so bright
Sometimes songwriting really is that easy. You have a groove. You have a title. And suddenly the song already seems to know what it wants to be.
Once I had the title, "My Match", all the fire imagery came almost automatically: white hot, a thousand kilowatts, striking the fire, lighting my soul, torch and wick. I wasn’t trying to be particularly clever. I was just following the metaphor wherever it wanted to go.
I’ve always wanted to write love songs that aren’t sappy. "My Match" is a heavy, driving rock song, but underneath all that rhythm and heat, it is an absolute, unequivocal love song.
And that may be one of the harder things to pull off in rock and roll.
Lyrics
VERSE 1:
your eyes warm this quiet room
candles cast shadows that follow you
with just one strike, you light my soul
with your spark, baby, I feel whole
CHORUS:
you’re MY MATCH, my flame at night
ignite me, baby, in this moonlight
with every touch, we set the world alight
you’re MY MATCH, we burn so bright
VERSE 2:
in your glow, my heart gets white-hot
i swear that you’re a thousand kilowatts
every look, every touch, every kiss
your arms are a boiling bliss
CHORUS
BRIDGE:
you strike the fire, you light my soul
in your heat, i lose control
i strike the fire, you let it stay
in the light, we’ll find our way
VERSE 3:
you make me blaze with just one flick
if you’re the torch then I’m the wick
your sultry smile, our torrid lust
we swelter until we both combust
CHORUS:
